CSD help to get Thunder Horse back on its legs
The Thunder Horse platform is located some 150 miles south east of New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico. It's still there but only just! The BP platform was hit by Hurricane Dennis in July 2005, placing the structure under massive pressure. As a result, water entered the legs and with devastating consequences washed out the Block Systems that were initially installed to seal the cable transits. The resulting flooding caused the platform to list heavily, so much so that the lower deck reached the sea surface.
The platform owners, BP, turned to CSD to help get the platform operational and safeguard against any future disasters. As a result of installing CSD high pressure seals to replace the system that proved inadequate previously, as well as using RISE on many cable penetrations throughout the platform CSD has helped to ensure that Thunder Horse has a future again.
Following the approach by BP, CSD developed the DYNATITE system, which stands for dynamic tightness. Our research and development team have developed a system that will stand up to the job when a disaster occurs, easily coping with pressure loads of more than 10 bar and spike pressures of 10 bar. On top of that it's easy to install, just requiring a bit of lubricant and a push!
While specially developed for the columns of semi-submersible rigs, the system can be used in a variety of hazardous areas. For example, in explosion proof environments and areas at risk of tsunami. CSD are proud of the fact that their product will stand up to the most extreme of tests.
